Loretta Merritt has been a partner with the firm since 1992. She is one of the few lawyers in Toronto who has substantial experience representing both plaintiffs and defendants in abuse and harassment matters in civil lawsuits and employment cases.

She has represented hundreds of plaintiffs and defendants in a variety of matters, including sexual, physical and emotional abuse of children by neighbours, relatives, police officers, doctors, members of the clergy and claims involving teachers and school boards (both public and private), children’s clubs, children’s aid societies, boy scouts, big brothers, group homes, non-offending negligent parents, and institutions, such as training schools. Loretta has been involved in the Maple Leaf Gardens and Ontario Training Schools sex abuse cases representing large groups of plaintiffs. She has represented adults and children; men and women in civil abuse cases.
Loretta’s civil litigation practice also includes traumatic injury litigation, (products liability, medical malpractice, motor vehicle cases), labour relations and employment litigation and professional negligence and other torts.
She regularly publishes and presents papers and gives seminars to associates, other lawyers and clients on current issues in her areas of practice. Loretta has been on the Board of Directors of the Osgoode Hall Law School Alumni Association and the York University Alumni Association. She has taught Professional Responsibility and Public Law (administrative law and the Charter) at the Bar Admission Course and Civil Trial Advocacy at Queen’s University and is also counsel to the Canadian Centre for Abuse Awareness.
Loretta has received Martindale Hubble’s highest possible Peer Review Rating: General Ethical Standards Rating V (very high), and Legal Abilities Rating A (very high to pre-eminent).
Loretta graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1985. She was called to the Ontario Bar in 1987 and she obtained a Masters Degree in Constitutional Law from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1990.
