Ron Manes’ practice focuses on trial and appellate advocacy in all areas of commercial litigation and tort litigation at all levels of trial and appeal courts, including the Supreme Court of Canada. He has served as counsel to many public or quasi-public bodies, including the Federation of Law Societies, the Ontario Civilian Commission on Police Services and the Toronto Police Services Board. Most recently, he was Lead Commission Counsel to the Bellamy Inquiry (Toronto Computer Leasing Inquiry).
Ron was selected by his peers as one of Canada’s leading practitioners, in Best Lawyers in Canada and The Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory. He is consistently rated the highest possible peer review rating (AV) in legal ability and ethical standards in the international legal directory, Martindale Hubbell.
He was a five-term elected Bencher and is a Life Bencher (Governor) of The Law Society of Upper Canada (the profession’s governing body), where he has served as Past Chair of: the Governance Committee, Certification Board, Strategic Planning Committee and the Access to Justice Committee. He has also served as Past Chair of several other organizations: the Ontario Centre for Advocacy Training, the Law Foundation of Ontario, Pro Bono Law Ontario, Lawyers’ Assistance Program (LINK), the Volunteer Lawyers Service and the Osgoode Hall Law School Alumni Association.
Ron is a recipient of the Ontario Bar Association Award for Distinguished Service, the Osgoode Hall Law School Golden Key Award, Lawyer of the Year (Advocacy Resource Centre for the Handicapped) and has been honoured by various other organizations for contributions to the legal profession and the community.
He is co-author of Manes’ Organized Advocacy, Solicitor Client Communications in Canadian Law and The Law of Confidential Communications in Canada and lectures regularly in advocacy.
Ron obtained his LLB from Osgoode Hall Law School and his LLM from Harvard Law School where he attended as a Laidlaw Fellow.
