Who We Are

Torkin Manes is a vibrant, growing, medium-size firm located in downtown Toronto. Our 72 lawyers practise in all areas of business law and litigation, with a special focus on client service and results. Our clients consistently give us positive reviews based on their legal and strategic outcomes.

Our Approach

We see the law as a tool to accomplish our clients' goals. At Torkin Manes, you will find:
  • an outstanding group of lawyers backed by dedicated and knowledgeable support staff,
  • an expanding depth of legal practice, and
  • a unique culture that nourishes the professional and personal goals of its lawyers.

The Student Experience

We immerse our students in every aspect of our practices, with equal emphasis on their professional development, as well as their knowledge and skills.

It is our goal for our students to become future lawyers and partners at Torkin Manes. Accordingly, we take our teaching and mentoring obligations very seriously, with the aim of helping each student become the best lawyer that he or she can be.

Students at the firm become intimately involved in all aspects of our practice, seeing files through from start to finish. They conduct client interviews, motions, examinations, Small Claims Court trials, and participate in all aspects of corporate and real estate closings. We deliver on our promise to provide students with practical, hands-on experience.

Our students work together with lawyers of all levels of experience, as well as directly with our clients.

Our Programs

We run a summer program for second year students and an articling program for students who have completed their third year of law school. Both programs are practically oriented and designed to introduce students to all aspects of the practice of law.

Summer students are based in either Business Law (including Real Estate), or Litigation. The summer period runs from May to August each year. We are now accepting applications from Second Year Students for Summer 2009 . Closing date for acceptance of such applications is Tuesday, September 9, 2008, as prescribed in the LSUC's Procedures Governing the Recruitment of Students for Summer 2009 Positions in the City of Toronto.

Our articling students commence their articles in August, after completing the Skills and Professional Responsibility Program. Articling students spend approximately half of their time in each rotation (Business Law - including Real Estate and Litigation), to ensure that each student receives a well rounded and comprehensive articling experience.

Each articling student participates in our unique Partner Intensive program. This program is a one month intensive term where each articling student works closely with and/or shadows a partner in his or her area of interest so that they gain valuable insight into the day-to-day practice of law.

Our lawyers hold weekly lunch seminars for students to provide them with substantive knowledge and skills training. These seminars are designed to introduce our students to many areas of law that we practise and gives them the tools that they will need in order to excel in their articles and later as lawyers.

The closing date for acceptance of Articling Student applications is Friday, July 11, 2008, as prescribed in the LSUC's Procedures Governing the Recruitment of Articling Students for the 2009-2010 Articling Term.

Both summer and articling students are assigned a mentor to whom they can turn for questions, direction and guidance. Students receive regular feedback and evaluation from their mentors, as well as direct feedback from the lawyers assigning particular tasks.

While we work hard at Torkin Manes, we play hard too. Student and firm social events occur on both a planned and less formal basis. Our firm hosts fundraising events for both the Hospital for Sick Children and the United Way and participates in a number of community and charitable events including the Run for the Cure and the annual CN Tower Stair Climb.

What Our Students Say

Our students consistently tell us that they are learning much more than their peers at other firms by both doing and observing. They also comment on how much they enjoy working within the Torkin Manes team.

In their own words . . .

"A firm truly committed to a student's education…never have I felt intimidated or wary of approaching a senior partner with a question or concern."
~ Marco Falco, 2004-2005 Articling Student and current Associate

"I had a tremendous summer at Torkin Manes. The work itself was stimulating. The people at all levels of the firm were welcoming and extremely helpful. The relatively informal structure of the program enabled me to gain exposure to a variety of legal issues and procedures, but at the same time allowed me to take initiative to develop deeper knowledge in areas of law that interested me."
~ Jodi Kovitz, 2004 Summer Student, 2005-2006 Articling Student and current Associate

"Torkin Manes is a firm that enables articling students and young lawyers to progress at an exceptional pace by giving us the opportunity to handle our own files, meet with clients, mediate, argue before tribunals and courts and gain experience in almost all of the different practice areas of law. Senior lawyers are always accessible and willing to lend a helping hand and to educate."
~ Nili Birshtein, 2005-2006 Articling Student and current Associate

“The high level of work and responsibility a student experiences at Torkin Manes is truly amazing. It is the perfect place to establish a career in law as the opportunities here are endless, and the lawyers show a level of interest in your personal development that is second to none.”
~ Sammy Redlick, 2006-2007 Articling Student and 2007 Associate
